Although there was debate about who should be the third member of a pinnacle where Bach and Beethoven’s presence was unquestioned, von Bülow passionately defended Brahms, supporting his argument with the key of Beethoven’s third symphony: “My credo is E-flat major, the key of the 'Eroica', with its three flats in the key signature (3 b): Bach-Beethoven-Brahms.”
